HAPPENINGS UNIOR SCHOOL INTER HOUSE TUG OF WAR COMPETITION Class 1: 1st: Orion and Phoenix (Joint Winners) 3rd:: Scorpius and Pegasus Class II: 1st: Pegasus 2nd: Orion 3rd: Phoenix 4th: Scorpius INTER - HOUSE (MIDDLES) FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT The Inter-House Football for Middle School (Classes VI-VIII) was a closely contested 6 a side tournament. After some rigorous practice the teams took each other on in a round-robin tournament and played to the best of their ability. Pegasus House triumphed by winning all their matches. The positions were as follows: 1st: Pegasus 2nd: Scorpius 3rd: Phoenix 4th: Orion INTER-HOUSE (MIDDLES) THROWBALL FOR GIRLS The Inter House for Middles Throwball took place at the end of June. The trials had begun earlier in the month. The Girls put their heart and soul into practice and the standard play was distinctly better than before. In the tournament Scorpius were the favourites to win as they had a few school team players in their side they had to fight tooth and nail to beat Pegasus who played much beyond expectations. The Final results were as follows: 1st: Scorpius 2nd: Pegasus 3rd: Orion 4th: Phoenix INTER CLASS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT The Class XII students organised a 6 a side Inter Class football tournament. The teams that made it to the semi finals were Class XII A & B teams, Staff and Class XA. The Staff lost to Class XII (B) on penalties while the Class XII (A) team beat Class XA by a solitary goal. In the all Class XII final, the A team won by a goal. In the third place play off, the Staff team beat Class XA by a single goal. INTER HOUSE CHESS COMPETITION The Inter House Chess competition was a hard fought affair and conducted over a period of three days. In the Senior Section (IX-XII) the results were as follows: 1st: Orion and Scorpius 3rd: Scorpius 4th: Phoenix Satadip Kundu (Scorpius) did not lose a single game in the tournament. In the Middles Tournament (VI-VIII) the results were as follows: 1st: Orion 2nd: Phoenix and Pegasus 4th: Scorpius In the Junior Section (III-V), the positions were as follows: 1st: Phoenix 2nd: Orion 3rd: Pegasus 4th: Scorpius JUNIOR SCHOOL FOOTBALL & DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT The Inter House Football and Dodgeball Inter House tournaments created great excitement in Junior School. Students of Classes III, IV and V all underwent trials and the House Captains finally shortlisted the best squad for their house. In the Football tournament Pegasus were crowned Champions followed by Phoenix House. The results were as follows: 1st Pegasus 2nd Phoenix 3rd Orion 4th Scorpius In the Dodgeball tournament, Orion and Scorpius tied for first place after playing out a hard fought draw over two innings. The results were as follows: 1st Orion and Scorpius 3rd Phoenix 4th Scorpius CBSE CCE TEACHING WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS The Principal and ten teachers of the Senior School attended a workshop conducted by the CBSE at APS School, Bengdubi on 26.4.13. The Workshop was about "Intergration of Formative Assessments into the CCE". The workshop helped the teachers grasp a better understanding of the FA assessments and also enabled them to clarify certain doubts about the CCE system. SENIOR INTER-HOUSE BENGALI DEBATE
The Senior Inter House Bengali Debate was conducted on 19.4.13. The topic for the debate was "There is no place for Politics in Educational Institutions". The debate was hotly contested and the students had done their research quite well. Lots of statistics were quoted and strong arguments made, both for and against the motion. Pegasus House were deserving winners of the Debate. Their team comprised Debasmita Paul (XII), Teests Roy (XII) and Debdyuti Deb (X) In the Extempore speeches, Debasmita Paul was was nominated the Best Speaker of the debate. Debdyuti Deb of Pegasus once again stole the show for Pegasus with her speech on "An autobiography of a school bench". The Positions were as follows: 1. Pegasus 2. Orion 3. Phoenix 4. Scorpius
CAREER COUNSELLING SEMINAR
A group of 29 students attended a Career Counselling Workshop at Birla Divya Jyoti School on 18.4.13. They were informed about the prospects in the fields of Media, Journalism, Realty and Entrepreneurship. The students were accompanied by two teachers.
INVESTITURE CEREMONY OF THE NEW PREFECT COUNCIL & CHAMPION HOUSE
The new Prefect Council was sworn in to office on 9,4,13 at a solemn ceremony. The Asembly began with a prayer and the school hymn. The prefects then took the oath, swering loyalty to their school and house. The symbolic handing over of the school flag to the Head Boy, Tanmoy Das and Head Girl, Kaveri Ghosh was done by the Principal. The House flags were handed over to the respective House Captains and Prefects by the House Masters. The ceremony was followed by the presentations of the Champion House, Academic Cup and Co-Curricular Cup for the 2012-2013 session. Scorpius claimed the Co-Curricular cup while Orion took home the Academic Cup. Orion was then declared the Champion House much to the jubilation of its members. FAREWELL TO MRS. SUKLA ROY AND MRS. UMA BHATTACHARYA
The school bid farewell to Mrs. Sukla Roy and Mrs. Uma Bhattacharya at an emotional ceremony. Mrs. Sukla Roy retired from service after a long stint as the Art and Craft teacher of the Junior school. The school thanked her for her services and presented her a bouque and memento at the function. Mrs. M.R. Sadiq gave a speech recounting the early days of school and Mrs. Roy's contribution. Mrs. Uma Bhattacharya also left due to personal reasons and was given a bouquet by the Head Girl and her contribution was appreciated by all. She gave an emotional farewell speech,
SENIOR SCHOOL INTER HOUSE ENGLISH DEBATE The Senior School Inter House Debated was conducted on 26.2.13 in the School Hall. In the knockout round of the debate Pegasus House squared of against Scorpius House. The topic in front of the House was "India is not a safe country to live in". The speakers of both houses made their case strongly. Pegasus House won the debate and Debdyuti Dey (Class IX, Pegasus) was adjudged the Best Speaker. In the second elimination debate between Phoenix and Orion the topic under consideration was "Honesty in sport has disappeared". Phoenix won the debate with their impassioned speeches. Aritri Dutta (Class XI, Phoenix) was adjudged the Best Speaker. In the Turn Coat debates, Kristina Yasmeen Sadiq (Class IX, Orion) won the debate speaking on "The Middle Class have lost their values". In the final debate between Phoenix and Pegasus the topic was "We have a democratic system but no democratic values". Phoenix emerged victorius. Their team comprised Aritri Dutta (XI), Prateeksha Ghosh (XI) and Deb Kumar Roy (IX). Aritri Dutta of Phoenix House was adjudged the Best Speaker of the Debates. CLASS XI PICNIC The Class XI students of the Arts, Commerce and Science section had an enjoyable day out on 24.2.13 when they went for a picnic to Madhuban park with some teachers. They had a lot of fun playing games and sharing tasty treats taken from home. ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION - PRE-PRIMARY SECTION The students of LKG and UKG Classes showcased their artistic talent at the Art and Craft Exhibition held on 17.2.13. The colourful and innovative use of material drew great admiration from all. Congratulations to our tiny tots for having worked so hard and to the teachers who helped them all along the way.
PROBLEM SOLVING ASSESSMENT TEST
The Problem Solving Assessment Test introduced by the CBSE for Classes IX and XI was conducted in all seriousness on 16,2,13. The students, who were exposed to a test of this kind for the first time, quite enjoyed the experience. "The questions were interesting and challenging", said Aritri Dutta of Class XI (Humanities). "It asks you to think quickly and work on time management", said Kristina of Class IX.
CLASS XII FAREWELL
The Class XII Batch of 2012-13 were given a farewell by the students of Class XI on 14,2,13. The Class XII were made to feel as special as possible. The hall was decorated beautifully. The students of Class XI put up a short cultural programme that included dances, skits, a band performance and games. There was much cheering in the hall and good natured humour in the comments passed. The Class XII joined in the programme with enthusiasm. The programme was followed by the memento's being given to the batch and then followed by lunch. Sumiran Chettri, the outgoing Head Boy gave a moving speech thanking the school, staff and his juniors for all the help and love received by all the Class XII in school. The students got quite emotional and a few tears were shed before they decided to go out in style, dancing away to the latest hit songs. It was a memorable afternoon indeed. JUNIOR SCHOOL PICNICS
Classes I-V went on picnics in the second and third week of the month of February. The students had a wonderful time in the open air playing games and eating goodies brought from home. Class III went to the edge of the forest, while the other classes went to Madhuban Park in Sukna.
INTER- HOUSE CRICKET FOR SENIOR BOYS
The Inter House Cricket was a closely contested affair as it was the first Tournament that saw four houses fighting it out for the crown. There were some sterling performances during the three day tournament. Sumiran Chettri, the Captain of Pegasus House led from the front wth both bat and ball and ensured that they won. In the match against Orion House, it was Sumiran;s century (113) that enabled them to chase down a mammoth total of 237 set by the opposition. Orion House were determined not to let that shock defeat get them down and they went on to win their next two matches convincingly with the help of centuries in each by Prakash Pandey (107 Vs Phoenix and 106 Vs Scorpius). Orion ended the tournament as runners up. Phoenix and and Scorpius did their best to compete, but were outplayed. Phoenix came third and the young team of Scorpius came fourth. TALENT SHOW - JUNIOR SCHOOL Students of Classes I-V were invited to display their talents in recitation, music and dance in the second week of February. Enthuastic participation was seen from all classes. We had performances of a wide variety of song and dance - classical, modern and folk. Students played the guitar, sitar, tabla and the keyboard. The prize winners were given their certificates at Assembly by the Headmistress.
INTER HOUSE CRICKET FOR JUNIOR BOYS There was great excitement in the Junior Classes before the commencement of the Inter House Cricket for Junior boys. New bats and cricket balls were stuffed into school bags as the boys sought their hour of glory on the field. The tournament ended with Orion on top followed by Pegasus, Phoenix and Scorpius.
